Modelling S-Wave Velocity Structure Beneath the Central Main Ethiopian Rift Using Receiver Functions

چکیده
We applied the receiver function (RF) technique on high-quality teleseismic earthquake data recorded by RiftVolc broadband network from February 2016 to October 2017. calculate RFs at 17 stations, which are inverted estimate Vs, and Vp/Vs structure beneath Central Main Ethiopian Rift Eastern plateau. The observed slow S-wave velocity (Vs) in uppermost crust (<6 km depth) is interpreted as sedimentary and/or volcanic layers. Beneath rift valley, crustal Vs heterogeneous both laterally with depth. In particular, (?2–3 km/s) localised centres upper-mid but ubiquitously lower low ?3.5 km/s common. associated high ratios of ?1.9–2.0. Vp consistent seismic velocities, presence small fraction (<5%) partial melt previous imaging studies crust. addition, contrast between upper mantle. results suggest that magmatically active rifts might be more widespread than previously thought an important component magma plumbing system. contrast, far homogeneous faster Plateau, a distinct mantle suggesting less deformation what central zone.

Mantle shear-wave velocity structure beneath the Hawaiian hot spot.
Defining the mantle structure that lies beneath hot spots is important for revealing their depth of origin. Three-dimensional images of shear-wave velocity beneath the Hawaiian Islands, obtained from a network of sea-floor and land seismometers, show an upper-mantle low-velocity anomaly that is elongated in the direction of the island chain and surrounded by a parabola-shaped high-velocity anom...
متن کاملInvestigating the S Wave Velocity Structure Beneath Southwest North America through Seismogram Comparison of C052297B Earthquake
In this research the investigation concerning the earth structure beneath the Southwest North America landmass is carried out, which covers a small area, i.e. between Mexico and California. S speed models for this area are obtained by carrying out seismogram fitting in time domain and three simultaneous Cartesian components. Seismogram data are the effect of earthquake C052297B in Guererro, Mex...
متن کاملVariation of Lithosphere-Asthenosphere boundary beneath Iran by using S Receiver function
The current geological and tectonic setting of Iran is due to the ongoing convergence between the Arabian and Eurasian Plates, which resulted in the formation of the Iranian plateau, mountain building, extensive deformation and seismicity. The Iranian plateau is characterized by various domains including the continental collision and the oceanic plate seduction. Based on S receiver functions ar...
متن کاملthe crustal structure beneath the northwest of the zagros (kermanshah region) from teleseismic receiver functions
in this study, we used teleseismic data which was recorded by 5 stations (dhr, ghg, kom, lin and vis) of the kermanshah seismic network from 2003 to 2007 with mb?5.5 and epicentral distances from 30° to 95°. the crustal structure beneath these stations was determined by the modeling of the p receiver functions. the main phases, which were observed in our final p receiver functions, are moho con...
